The engineering college, started in 1946 by B. M. Sreenivasiah, was the first private sector initiative in technical education in India and is run by the BMS Educational Trust. This institute is affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University and has received the standing of an exploration establishment by the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) within the year 2005.
